Ministry of Health proposes name for amalgamated multi-profession health regulatory college: College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia

On December 1, 2023, the BC Ministry of Health posted proposed amendments to the regulations of four health profession regulatory colleges, including CMTBC, to reflect the Ministry’s proposed name for the new multi-profession college that will be created when the colleges legally amalgamate on June 28, 2024.

The amalgamation will combine these current colleges: College of Massage Therapists of BC, College of Chiropractors of BC, College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC, and College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC.

The Ministry of Health has proposed the following name for the new amalgamated college: College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia.

The Ministry of Health, which will make the final decision on the new college’s name, is accepting feedback on the proposed name. Feedback may be sent directly to the Ministry until January 12, 2024 by emailing PROREGADMIN@gov.bc.ca.

The Ministry of Health has also posted proposed amendments to the regulations of seven other colleges to reflect the Ministry’s proposed name for the new multi-profession college that will be created when these colleges amalgamate, also on June 28, 2024. These colleges are: College of Dietitians of BC, College of Occupational Therapists of BC, College of Optometrists of BC, College of Opticians of BC, College of Physical Therapists of BC, College of Psychologists of BC, and College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC.

The Ministry of Health has proposed the following name for this new college: College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia. The Ministry is accepting feedback on the proposed name, emailed to PROREGADMIN@gov.bc.ca, until January 12, 2024.

The amalgamations are part of the Ministry of Health’s multi-year initiative to modernize BC’s health profession regulatory framework. Amalgamation of health profession regulatory colleges has been anticipated since a report by Harry Cayton, CBE, released by the Ministry of Health in 2019, and the 2020 report of the Steering Committee on Modernization of Health Professional Regulation.
